CAREER CHOICES

Explore finance careers before choosing a path

Look at the work, capabilities and experience behind a job title.

Start with the work

Pick two areas you are curious about, such as audit, reporting or financial management. Read role descriptions and note the tasks that appeal to you. A title can sound attractive while the daily work is very different from what you imagined.

Use a structured reference

ACCA’s Career Navigator organises roles by specialism and capability, with different levels of experience. Use it as a starting point to understand the vocabulary of roles and the skills they call for.

Compare with real vacancies

Read several current job descriptions in your intended location. Record recurring requirements: systems experience, analysis, communication or industry knowledge. Ask someone doing the work which requirements matter most for a beginner.

Run a small experiment

Try a relevant project, speak to a practitioner or look for suitable practical exposure. Keep a short record of what you enjoyed and what you found difficult. Choosing a direction becomes easier when you have evidence from doing some of the work.
